Formula 1 Considering Revamping Points System: Will More Drivers Benefit?

Formula 1 fans might soon witness a major change in the points system, as reports suggest that the F1 authorities are considering revamping the current system. According to F1 journalist Vincenzo Landino, discussions are underway to award points all the way down to the 12th position, with the driver finishing eighth set to receive five points instead of the current four.

The proposed changes aim to increase competition in the middle of the pack, giving smaller teams more opportunities to push for a better finish. The current points system, in place since 2010, already includes an additional point for the fastest lap of the race, added in 2019. Before this system, only drivers ranking from P1 to P8 earned points.

While the points system has remained stable for the last five years, other regulations in F1 have seen significant changes to bring the competition closer. However, these changes have inadvertently favored one team and one driver, Max Verstappen. The Dutchman has been a dominant force in F1 since 2022, setting records for most points in a single season and winning multiple races.

Verstappen’s success on the track has come at a cost, as he ended up paying over a million dollars to renew his super license for the 2024 season. With the proposed changes to the points system, the upcoming F1 season promises to be even more exciting and competitive, with teams and drivers vying for valuable points in every race. Fans can expect a thrilling battle on the track as the sport continues to evolve and adapt to changing times.
