Galway Dominate Glentoran in All-Island Cup Opener
Reigning champions Galway inflicted a heavy defeat on Women’s Premiership holders Glentoran in the All-Island Cup, solidifying their dominance in the competition.
Glentoran, who suffered a 5-2 defeat in their opening game, faced another tough challenge against high-flying Galway. The current Women’s Premier Division leaders got off to a strong start with Katie Thompson scoring a brilliant goal from a narrow angle. Substitute Emily Kavanaugh doubled their advantage late in the game, before Jenna Slattery and Eve Dossen added two more goals to seal the victory for the holders.
On the other hand, Cliftonville, beaten finalists last year, also endured a difficult afternoon as they were thrashed 6-0 by Wexford. Ceola Bergin opened the scoring with a clinical strike, before adding two more goals to complete her hat-trick. Ellen Molloy and Emily Corbett also found the back of the net to complete the rout for Wexford.
Meanwhile, Linfield came from behind to secure their first win in the competition, defeating Bohemians 2-1. After falling behind, Linfield equalized through substitute Bernie Ferriera before taking the lead with an own goal from Bohemians. The game took a turn in Linfield’s favor as Bohemians were reduced to 10 players after Tiegan Ruddy was sent off.
