Local Champions Emerge from District 5-3A Tennis Tournament
Two local champions emerged from the District 5-3A tennis tournament on Friday, showcasing their skills and determination on the court. At Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Seabreeze claimed first place in the boys standings, while New Smyrna Beach secured the top spot on the girls side, with the Sandcrabs as the girls runners-up.
All three of these talented teams have earned trips to the regional playoffs, with the semifinals set to take place on Tuesday. The Seabreeze boys will be hosting Edgewater at 3 p.m., while the New Smyrna Beach girls will welcome Edgewater to town, and the Sandcrab girls will be traveling to Sebring for their matchups.
With their impressive performances, the Volusia-Flagler area will be well represented in the regional postseason, with four girls teams and three boys teams moving on. Spruce Creek’s girls and Flagler Palm Coast’s boys also secured their spots in the playoffs earlier in the week.
In District 3-3A, Matanzas’ boys program secured a spot in the regional playoffs after placing second in their district tournament, with the Sharks claiming the crown. The Pirates will be facing off against Gainesville in the Region 2-3A semifinals on Tuesday.
Father Lopez also made waves in District 4-1A, advancing to the finals in four of the five singles positions and finishing as the girls runner-up to P.K. Yonge. Sophomore Ofelia Stout booked her ticket to the state tournament with an impressive win in the No. 1 singles finals.
Overall, it was an exciting week of high school tennis, with local teams showcasing their talent and determination as they look to make their mark in the regional playoffs.
