The Impact of AI on Sports: How Leicester Tigers Used AI to Win the Premiership

Leicester Tigers, an English rugby team, made a remarkable turnaround in their performance thanks to the implementation of AI technology. After finishing at the bottom of the Premiership in 2019, the team utilized AI tools developed by London-based sports data company, Prospect and its subsidiary, Oval, to analyze player performance and model different actions that could impact their win probability.

The results were evident as Leicester Tigers went on to win the 2022 Premiership, topping the table among 13 other teams. This success story highlights the growing influence of AI in revolutionizing the world of sports. The use of AI in sports has proven to be a game-changer, with applications ranging from player scouting to tactical analysis and fan engagement.

Motasem El Bawab, the chief information officer at N3XT Sports, emphasized the role of AI in enhancing fan and athlete data, making sports properties more appealing to investors. The impact of AI on sports clubs has been significant, driving up their overall value and attracting lucrative investment deals.

Deutsche Bank analysts noted the exponential growth in sports mergers, acquisitions, and investments, attributing much of this success to the adoption of AI technology by sports clubs. The bank’s analysts highlighted the leveling of the playing field in leagues dominated by a few teams, thanks to the proliferation of sophisticated sports data analysis.

AI tools offer sports clubs numerous opportunities to enhance their performance, increase revenue streams, and engage with fans on a personalized level. The potential for AI to transform the sports industry is immense, with teams like FC Barcelona and the English women’s cricket team already reaping the benefits of AI-driven strategies.

As the sports industry continues to embrace AI technology, the onus is on teams to leverage these tools effectively to stay ahead of the competition. With AI becoming a standard tool for competitive advantage, sports organizations are poised to capitalize on the benefits of AI in driving up their valuations and securing a stronger foothold in the market.
