Steinbach Huskies Reunion: Remembering the Magic of the 1978-79 Hockey Season

The Steinbach Huskies Reunite for a Trip Down Memory Lane

In 1979, the town of Steinbach was buzzing with excitement as the Huskies made their way to the national final in the senior hockey playoffs. Fast forward to 1988, and the former players of the 1978-79 Allan Cup team gathered once again to relive the magic of that unforgettable season.

The reunion kicked off with an exhibition game between the former Huskies team and the current squad at the Steinbach Arena. Fans were treated to a trip down memory lane as they watched their hockey heroes take to the ice once again.

After the game, the players gathered at the Steinbach Curling Club for a banquet, where old friendships were renewed and stories from the past were shared. It was a night filled with laughter, camaraderie, and a shared love for the game of hockey.

Fifteen members of the 1978-79 squad were in attendance, with many still actively involved in the sport. Some have retired from competitive play, while others continue to lace up their skates and hit the ice.

Team captain Ralph Krentz, who went on to have a successful hockey career in Europe, shared one of the highlights of the season – a victory over the Trail Smoke Eaters after being counted out by the media. It was moments like these that made the 1978-79 season so special for the Huskies.

As the night came to a close, the former players reflected on the impact that season had on their lives and the community of Steinbach. While they may never reach the national finals again, the memories of that unforgettable season will always hold a special place in their hearts.

And as they parted ways, they made a promise to come together once again in another 10 years, ensuring that the legacy of the 1978-79 Steinbach Huskies will live on for years to come.
