Old Dominion rowing team shines at Kerr Cup

The Old Dominion rowing team put on an impressive display at the Kerr Cup over the weekend, showcasing their talent and determination on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.

The Varsity 8+ boat delivered a strong performance, finishing second in their heat with a time of 6:57.8. In the final, they secured a third-place finish, trailing only LaSalle and Drexel. The team, consisting of Lucy Brennan, Sydnee Blackburn, Sofia Bespalova, Nicole Knight, Jo Copeland, Maddie Enns, Helen Schuette, Haven Habhab, and coxswain Savannah Hartlove, demonstrated great teamwork and skill throughout the competition.

The 2V8+ boat also had a solid showing, finishing third in their heat to advance to the final. The race results are currently under review, but the team, made up of Olivia Kruse, Catherine Wilson, Lily Baumann, Bekah Kimman, Jinjoo Noh, Callie Crook, Nikki Dibacco, Emma Spinelli, and coxswain Elley Gortz, displayed determination and grit on the water.

Unfortunately, the Varsity4+ boat did not qualify for the final after finishing fourth in their heat. Despite this, the team consisting of Alexis Durand, Kendall Freeman, Kaila Smith, Afton Stahl, and coxswain Sheyla Daniels, showed resilience and determination throughout the race.

Head Coach Brian Conley praised the team’s performance at the Kerr Cup, highlighting the team’s ability to adapt to new lineups and execute race plans effectively. He expressed confidence in the team’s progress and emphasized the importance of faith and teamwork in achieving success.

The Monarchs will now turn their focus to the American Athletic Conference championship on May 12 in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, where they will look to build on their strong showing at the Kerr Cup and finish the season on a high note.
