CARICOM Conference on West Indies Cricket to be Chaired by Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister
The upcoming CARICOM conference on West Indies cricket is set to be a game-changer for the future of the sport in the region. Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister, Dr Keith Rowley, who is the current chairman of the Caricom prime ministerial sub-committee on cricket, is eagerly anticipating the discussions and outcomes of the conference.
Entitled ‘Reinvigorating West Indies Cricket – A Symposium for Strategic Collaboration and Innovation’, the conference will bring together key stakeholders in the cricketing world, including cricketing legends, former and current players, clubs, coaches, and administrators. The aim is to address crucial topics such as the strategic direction of West Indies cricket, the development of the sport, and the relationship between cricket and tourism.
One of the main objectives of the conference is to ensure that the best players always play for West Indies at all levels and in all formats of the game. Dr Rowley highlighted the need for a management and support structure that would make it attractive for top players like Sunil Narine to represent the West Indies. Narine, who recently scored his maiden T20 hundred for Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League, is being courted to come out of retirement and play for the West Indies in the upcoming ICC Men’s Twenty20 World Cup.
The decision to host the conference was made during the 46th regular meeting of the CARICOM heads of government last February in Guyana. With the future of West Indies cricket hanging in the balance, all eyes will be on the outcomes of this conference as stakeholders work towards a brighter future for the sport in the region.
