Emma Raducanu’s valiant defeat to Iga Swiatek ends four-match winning streak at Porsche Tennis Grand Prix
Emma Raducanu’s impressive run at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix came to an end as she fell to a valiant defeat against defending champion Iga Swiatek in the quarter-finals. The 21-year-old had been on a four-match winning streak, with straight-sets wins over Angelique Kerber and Linda Noskova in the first two rounds, following victories in Great Britain’s Billie Jean King Cup clash with France.
Raducanu put up a strong fight against world No 1 Swiatek, breaking in the first game of the match despite being 40-0 down. However, Swiatek proved to be too strong, winning the first-set tie-break and breaking Raducanu early in the second set. Despite Raducanu’s best efforts, Swiatek secured a 7-6 (7-2) 6-3 victory to advance to the semi-finals.
Raducanu’s performance in Stuttgart has been impressive, propelling her to just outside the world’s top 200 as she continues her comeback from ankle and wrist surgery last year. Her ability to match Swiatek and defeat top players like Kerber and Noskova bodes well for her future in the sport.
Swiatek, who now holds a 3-0 head-to-head record against Raducanu, praised the young Brit’s game and expressed confidence in her ability to return to the top. Despite the defeat, Raducanu’s performance against top competition like Swiatek showcases her potential for future success.
In other matches, Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova and Elena Rybakina also advanced to the semi-finals.
