Little Falls Flyers Dominate Pequot Lakes Patriots in Doubleheader
In a thrilling Granite Ridge Conference doubleheader on Thursday, April 18, the Little Falls Flyers showcased their dominance as they defeated the Pequot Lakes Patriots in both games. The Flyers came out strong in Game One, securing an 11-1 victory, followed by an 8-3 win in Game Two.
Alex Thoma was the standout player of the day, going 5-for-6 with a triple, home run, two runs, and three RBIs across both games. Carter Gwost, Joey Welinski, and Izaak Kalis also made significant contributions to the Flyers’ success, finishing 2-3 in Game One. Charlie Smieja pitched a stellar game, striking out six over five innings to secure the win for the Flyers.
On the Patriots’ side, Clay Erickson stood out with a 2-3 performance, including a double and an RBI. However, Colten McGuire was tagged with the loss in Game One.
In Game Two, Carter Oothoudt shined for the Flyers, going 2-3 at the plate and pitching four innings of scoreless relief to earn the win. Kyle Kotaska and Conner Quale made notable plays for the Patriots, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Flyers’ strong performance.
With these victories, the Little Falls Flyers improved to 5-1 in the conference and 5-1 overall, while the Pequot Lakes Patriots fell to 0-4 in the conference and 1-4 overall. The Flyers will face off against St. Cloud Cathedral next, while the Patriots will take on Nashwauk-Keewatin in their upcoming games.
In other conference action, the Pierz Pioneers secured an 8-1 victory over the Milaca Wolves, with Chase Becker leading the way with a strong pitching performance and offensive contributions. Reese Young and Bo Woitalla also made key plays to help the Pioneers improve to 3-1 in the conference and 4-1 overall.
Unfortunately, the Aitkin Gobblers suffered a 4-1 loss to the Mesabi East Giants, with Hunter Moreland recording the lone hit and RBI for the team. Jake McGuire took the loss on the mound, but the Gobblers are looking to bounce back in their next game against Crosby-Ironton.
