Visma-Lease a Bike Team Manager Calls for Improved Safety in Professional Cycling

Visma-Lease a Bike team manager Richard Plugge is known for his outspoken nature, but the recent string of high-speed crashes and injuries has left him sad and angry about the lack of progress in improving safety in professional cycling.

The Visma-Lease a Bike team leaders, including Wout van Aert and Jonas Vingegaard, have been among the many WorldTour riders who have suffered serious crashes in the early months of the 2024 season. Van Aert missed key races due to his crash, while Vingegaard is still in the hospital recovering from his injuries.

Plugge expressed his concern for the well-being of his riders, emphasizing the need for them to fully recover before returning to cycling. He also highlighted the financial implications of crashes and injuries on the team, as sponsors may leave if there is a lack of success.

The team manager’s frustration stems from the perceived lack of action in improving safety in professional cycling. Plugge has been a vocal advocate for implementing the SafeR project, which aims to enhance safety measures in the sport. However, bureaucratic delays and debates on leadership have hindered its progress, much to Plugge’s dismay.

Plugge hopes that all stakeholders in the sport, including fans and race organizers, can prioritize safety above all else. He called on UCI President David Lappartient to take the lead on safety initiatives and urged everyone to work together to create a safer environment for riders.

In the face of adversity, Plugge remains determined to push for change and prioritize safety in professional cycling. As the sport continues to evolve, it is essential for all involved to prioritize the well-being of the riders and ensure a safe environment for competition.
