Matt Roan Named New Director of Athletics at James Madison University

James Madison University has announced that Matt Roan will be taking over as the new Director of Athletics, bringing his impressive track record from Eastern Kentucky University to the Dukes.

Roan, who led EKU through a conference transition to Atlantic Sun in 2021, is known for his ability to lift athletics programs to new heights. During his time at EKU, Roan oversaw significant facility upgrades and brought in a number of new coaches and staff members.

“I am honored and humbled by the opportunity to join the team at James Madison University,” said Roan. “This opportunity is special as it represents the ideal intersection of what is most important to me personally and professionally.”

Roan, a Pulaski County High School graduate, earned his Bachelor of Science in political science from Southern Utah University, where he also excelled on the football field. His experience and leadership make him the perfect fit to continue the success of JMU athletics.

Outgoing Director of Athletics Jeff Bourne expressed confidence in Roan’s ability to lead the Dukes to even greater heights, especially as the university moves towards full reclassification as FBS for the 2024-25 season.

Roan takes over at a time of great success for JMU athletics, with the football team finishing first in the Sun Belt East and qualifying for their first-ever FBS bowl game. The men’s basketball team also had a historic season, setting a program wins record and making an NCAA Second Round appearance for the first time in over four decades.

With Roan at the helm, the future looks bright for James Madison University athletics as they continue to strive for excellence both on and off the field.
