Exciting Merger: Burnham Sports Cricket Club and South Woodham Ferrers Join Forces as South Woodham and Burnham Cricket Club

The cricketing world in Essex is abuzz with excitement as Burnham Sports Cricket Club and South Woodham Ferrers have joined forces to create the new South Woodham and Burnham Cricket Club. This merger brings together two former rivals from the T Rippon Mid Essex Leagues under one banner, with the aim of creating a stronger and more vibrant cricketing community in the area.

The new club will field four Saturday teams, with matches being played at their two bases – Millfields in Burnham and Saltcoats Park in South Woodham. In addition to senior teams, there will also be opportunities for juniors to get involved, with regular training sessions for youngsters aged between seven and 12.

The decision to merge was made after players from both clubs were invited to vote, and the unanimous choice to link up speaks volumes about the excitement and optimism surrounding this new venture. The club has already unveiled a new badge and playing kits, with support from sponsors such as Elachi Indian Restaurant, the Railway public house, Mister Gees Foundation, and Clay Ratnage and Co.

Club chairman Chris Hawkins expressed his excitement about the merger, stating, “This is hugely exciting and we look forward to seeing what the next months and years bring as we all begin a new chapter. It made perfect sense for the two clubs to join forces and everyone has been fabulously supportive and positive.”

The club’s first match is scheduled to be a friendly against a Brentwood XI on Saturday, April 20, with an inter-club match set for April 27 and the league campaign kicking off on May 4. The 1st XI will be led by all-rounder Jamie Hamilton, with the first fixture being at home to Hatfield Peverel.
