Team New Zealand Launches New AC75 Boat Named Taihoro in Spectacular Ceremony

Team New Zealand’s new America’s Cup era has officially begun with the launch of their new AC75, named Taihoro, in a ceremony in Auckland. The vessel was gifted and blessed by Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, with the name inspired by Taihoro-Nukurangi, symbolizing speed and connection between sea and sky.

The build of the AC75 began over 10 months ago with 45 boat builders working on the project. After weeks of fitting out with technical components, the boat was finally unveiled last week. Team New Zealand’s chief executive Grant Dalton expressed pride in sharing the result of the team’s dedication and commitment with the public.

With each team only allowed to build one new AC75 for the America’s Cup in Barcelona, the unveiling of Team New Zealand’s vessel marks an important milestone in the competition. Other teams, such as Alinghi Red Bull Racing and Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli, have also revealed their AC75s, while others are expected to do so in the coming weeks.

The America’s Cup key dates have been set, with the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup Match scheduled for October 12-21. The challengers include teams from the UK, Switzerland, Italy, USA, and France, among others. Additionally, youth and women’s teams from various countries will also be competing in the event.

As Team New Zealand prepares to defend the America’s Cup later this year, the unveiling of the AC75 Taihoro represents a significant step in their journey towards victory.
