Exploring Ohio University’s Club Rowing Team: Making Waves on Dow Lake
Ohio University’s club rowing team, a unique group of novice rowers, has found its home at Dow Lake, standing out among the university’s 33 club sports. The team, comprised of both male and female members, practices and competes at Strouds Run State Park during the spring and fall seasons, showcasing their skills in regattas.
For Elise O’Donnell and Lilly Newton, joining the rowing team was a spur-of-the-moment decision at the Involvement Fair, leading them to become integral members of the executive board. The team’s dedication is evident as they practice three to four times a week, competing in races across Ohio against universities like Ohio State.
However, the team has faced challenges this spring as they were unable to practice on the water due to storage issues at Strouds Run. Despite this setback, the team remains resilient, welcoming newcomers each semester with no experience required and keeping expenses low for all members.
Looking ahead to the fall semester, the team has appointed Melissa Anderson as their coach, bringing a wealth of experience in exercise physiology. Anderson is eager to work with the team on their goals, emphasizing the merit-based nature of rowing and the potential for success with dedication and hard work.
As the team gears up for the upcoming season, O’Donnell, Newton, and Anderson are determined to make waves in the competition, fostering a supportive and inclusive environment for all members. With a focus on teamwork, perseverance, and personal growth, Ohio University’s club rowing team is poised for success in the upcoming regattas.
