Australian boxing coach Jamie Pittman withdraws from Paris 2024 Olympics amid misconduct allegations

Australian boxing coach Jamie Pittman has made the decision to withdraw from the Paris 2024 Olympics following an investigation into allegations of misconduct. Pittman, a former Olympian and world title challenger, admitted to a series of code-of-conduct breaches, including sexually inappropriate comments and behavior.

The allegations were brought forward by several members of the Australian national boxing setup, with complainants describing the behavior as “disgusting”, “offensive”, “gross”, and making them feel uncomfortable in his presence.

Specific instances of misconduct outlined in the findings include Pittman telling a male team member to “f*** more women to become more of a man”, taking inappropriate photos of team members, making lewd comments about women, and engaging in suggestive behavior in front of athletes.

In response to the findings, Pittman did not contest the allegations but made submissions regarding the nature of any sanctions. Ultimately, he was handed a six-month suspension from all CombatAus activities, given a reprimand, required to submit written apologies to impacted parties, and complete counseling and courses on anti-discrimination, anti-harassment, anti-bullying, and anti-sexual misconduct.

Pittman, who had already withdrawn his application for Paris 2024, stated that he did not want to cause any further stress or anxiety to the athletes preparing for the upcoming Olympic Games. He has also stepped down from the Australian Olympic Committee Indigenous advisory committee.

The news of Pittman’s withdrawal from the Olympics has sent shockwaves through the Australian boxing community, with many expressing disappointment in his actions and the impact it has had on the sport. It remains to be seen how the national boxing setup will move forward in light of these revelations.
