Neil Robertson misses out on World Snooker Championship qualification for first time since 2004

Welsh snooker player Jamie Jones caused a major upset by defeating former world champion Neil Robertson in the final qualifying round for the 2024 World Snooker Championship. Robertson, who won the championship in 2010, led 8-5 at one point, but Jones staged a remarkable comeback to win 10-9 and secure his place at the prestigious Crucible Theatre in Sheffield.

In another thrilling final-frame shootout, Welshman Jackson Page emerged victorious over Thailand’s Noppon Saengkham with a score of 10-9. The success for Wales continued as world number 18 Ryan Day also won his match 10-9 against Scotland’s Scott Donaldson.

Reflecting on his victory, Jones expressed his delight at qualifying for the championship for the fifth time, stating, “I don’t know what it is about this tournament, it just brings the best out of me.” He credited his never-give-up attitude for the win and acknowledged the challenge of facing Robertson, whom he had struggled against in the past.

Other notable results from the qualifying rounds included England’s David Gilbert defeating China’s Xiao Guodong 10-6, and China’s Si Jiahui making a comeback from being 4-0 down to beat compatriot Wu Yize 10-4. Joe O’Connor also secured his spot in the championship for the first time after defeating Matthew Selt in an all-English clash.

With the first-round draw set to take place soon, anticipation is building for the 2024 World Snooker Championship, which will feature a mix of top-ranked players and qualifiers vying for the prestigious title.
