Scotland Considering Hosting Scaled-Back Commonwealth Games in 2026
Scotland is considering hosting a scaled-back version of the Commonwealth Games in 2026, with a decision expected in May. The event would feature 10 to 13 sports, compared to the 18 sports showcased in Glasgow in 2014. The focus would be on quality over quantity, with all venues located within an eight-mile radius in Glasgow.
Ian Reid, chair of Commonwealth Games Scotland (CGS), expressed confidence in Scotland’s ability to host the event at a reasonable budget without any public investment. The CGS is currently discussing which sports would be included in the slimmed-down version of the Games, with aquatics and athletics being mandatory.
One of the key venues for athletics would likely be Scotstoun, the home of the Glasgow Warriors rugby team. Reid emphasized that the focus would be on delivering a high-quality sporting event, even with fewer sports on the program.
“The Commonwealth Games are really important to Scotland and a vital part of the fabric that enables our athletes to be on the pathway to the Olympics,” Reid told BBC Scotland News.
With the Commonwealth Games Federation willing to invest money from the Victorian settlement, there is potential for a successful and memorable event in 2026. Scotland’s ability to host a world-class sporting event without compromising on quality is a testament to its commitment to sports excellence.
