Navy Heavyweight Rowing Dominates Occoquan Collegiate Invitational
The Navy heavyweight rowing team showcased their dominance at the Occoquan Collegiate Invitational on Sunday, with all five of their top boats securing victories in two sessions of racing. Racing against a competitive field that included five ranked teams and two receiving votes, the Mids proved their strength and skill on the water.
Head coach Rob Friedrich expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, stating, “It was a good day of racing for us. I was happy to see all of our boats put together two solid races. There is more speed to gain so we will get back to work this week on the Severn.”
The first varsity eight crew set the tone for the day with a commanding victory over R/V Jacksonville in the morning heat, followed by another impressive win in the afternoon grand final against No. 19 Drexel. The second varsity and third varsity eights also delivered strong performances, with both crews improving their times in the grand finals to secure victories.
In the lower boat categories, Navy’s fourth and fifth varsity eights continued the winning streak, with both crews emerging victorious in their respective races. The fourth varsity eight and fifth varsity eight finals saw Navy maintaining their dominance, with the Mids securing wins over their opponents.
The Mids will now turn their focus to the upcoming Eastern Sprints League action, where they will face off against Cornell and Syracuse in a three-team meet next weekend. With their impressive showing at the Occoquan Collegiate Invitational, Navy is poised to continue their success in the upcoming competitions.
