Tour of Britain Women’s Finale to Take Place in Manchester, Cementing City’s Cycling Status
British Cycling has announced that the Tour of Britain Women will take place between 6 and 9 June, with the finale set to be hosted in Manchester. This decision comes after the Women’s Tour was cancelled in 2023 due to a lack of funding.
Manchester, which recently became the European Capital of Cycling, will play a significant role in the race, with the city and Greater Manchester region set to host the final leg of the event. Eamonn O’Rourke, the chief executive of Manchester Active, expressed his delight at hosting such a prestigious event, emphasizing the city’s commitment to supporting women’s sport and encouraging more women and girls to participate in physical activity.
The race will see the world’s top female riders compete in stages across North Wales, Warrington, and Greater Manchester, with the final leg taking riders from Manchester to Leigh. Warrington Borough Council’s chief executive, Prof Steven Broomhead, also expressed his excitement at hosting the event, highlighting the benefits it will bring to the town in terms of showcasing elite sport and promoting societal, health, and wellbeing benefits.
With Manchester’s reputation as a cycling hub continuing to grow, the Tour of Britain Women’s finale will further solidify the city’s position as a home of cycling. The route will commence from the National Cycling Centre, known as the ‘medal factory’ and home of British Cycling, adding to the excitement and anticipation surrounding the event. Fans and participants alike can look forward to an exhilarating and competitive race that celebrates the talent and dedication of female cyclists from around the world.
