Justin Langer Designates KL Rahul as ‘Impact Player’ for LSG in IPL Match against Punjab Kings
In a surprising move, Lucknow Super Giants head coach Justin Langer named KL Rahul as the ‘Impact Player’ and appointed Nicholas Pooran as captain for their Indian Premier League match against Punjab Kings in Lucknow on Saturday. This decision raised eyebrows as it is rare to see a captain being designated as the ‘Impact Player’.
Rahul, who recently recovered from a quadriceps injury, was declared fit before the IPL and has been leading the LSG team. However, Langer decided to give him a break and utilize him as an impact player for the match against Punjab Kings.
Speaking at the toss, Pooran explained the decision, stating, “KL is coming back from injury and we’re looking to give him a break in such a long tournament, but he’ll play as an impact player today. Everyone must take the opportunities and perform at their best.”
Sources within the LSG camp revealed that the decision was made by the coach to optimize the team’s resources. On days when LSG bat first, Rahul could be replaced to bring in a specialist bowler, as other players in the team can contribute with both bat and ball.
With players like Marcus Stoinis, Ayush Badoni, Krunal Pandya, Quinton De Kock, Nicholas Pooran, and Devdutt Padikkal in the squad, Langer is looking to make the best use of the available talent to secure victories in the tournament.
The move by Langer showcases his strategic thinking and willingness to experiment with team dynamics to achieve success in the IPL. It will be interesting to see how this decision plays out in the upcoming matches for Lucknow Super Giants.
