Carlos Alcaraz’s Madrid Open Title Defence in Doubt; Aryna Sabalenka Ready to Conquer Clay in Stuttgart – Sky Sports Tennis Update
Carlos Alcaraz, the defending champion of the Madrid Open, has cast doubt on his title defense as he continues to recover from a right arm injury. The young Spaniard, who recently won the Indian Wells title, sustained the injury during a practice session for the Monte-Carlo Masters and has been forced to miss key tune-up events for the French Open.
Speaking to reporters in Barcelona, Alcaraz expressed uncertainty about his participation in the upcoming Madrid Open, stating, “My feeling isn’t right, but it is what it is. Now I’m fully focused on recovery and I have a little more time.” Despite his intentions to compete in Madrid, Alcaraz acknowledged that his recovery progress is uncertain.
If Alcaraz is unable to make a full recovery in time for the Madrid Open, he may still have the opportunity to compete in Rome the following week before the French Open begins. Last year, Alcaraz reached the semi-finals at Roland Garros, showcasing his potential on the clay courts.
Meanwhile, Aryna Sabalenka is gearing up to conquer the clay in Stuttgart as she continues her preparations for the upcoming WTA event. The Australian Open champion has been focusing on her clay-court game since the Miami Open and sees Stuttgart as a good starting point for the clay season.
Sabalenka, who has finished runner-up in Stuttgart for the past three years, will face her good friend Paula Badosa in a highly anticipated match. Defending champion Iga Swiatek is also making the transition to clay smoothly, following her success in leading Poland into the Billie Jean King Cup Finals.
