Wout van Aert undergoes successful surgery for multiple fractures after high-speed crash
Belgian cyclist Wout van Aert underwent successful surgery on his fractured collarbone, sternum, and ribs after a high-speed crash during Dwars door Vlaanderen. The surgery was performed by renowned surgeon Tom Claes in Herentals, Belgium. Van Aert’s recovery timeline is uncertain, and he will miss the upcoming Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix.
His teammate Jasper Stuyven also underwent successful surgery for a fractured collarbone at the same hospital. Stuyven expressed disappointment at missing out on the upcoming races but remains optimistic about his return to cycling.
Both Van Aert and Stuyven were targeting the cobbled Monuments and the Giro d’Italia in May, but their participation in the Italian Grand Tour is now in doubt. The team will make a decision based on their recovery progress in the coming weeks.
Van Aert had a strong start to the season, winning Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne and securing podium finishes at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and E3 Saxo Classic. His dedication to the cobbled classics was evident in his training and performance leading up to the crash.
Several other riders, including Biniam Girmay, Laurenz Rex, Mads Pedersen, and Michele Gazzoli, were also injured in the crash. The incident occurred during a fast approach to the Kanarieberg climb, resulting in a pile-up that forced some riders off the course.
Despite the setbacks, Van Aert and Stuyven remain determined to make a strong comeback and continue their pursuit of victories in the future. Their resilience and dedication to the sport serve as inspiration to fans and fellow cyclists alike.
