Aberdeen appoint Jimmy Thelin as new manager: Peter Leven to remain in interim charge until end of season
Aberdeen Football Club has announced the appointment of Jimmy Thelin as their new manager, with the Swedish coach set to take charge in June after agreeing to a three-year deal. Thelin, who is currently the head coach of Elfsborg in Sweden, will bring his assistants Emir Bajrami and Christer Persson with him to Pittodrie in the summer.
The Dons had been on the lookout for a new manager since sacking Barry Robson in January, with Neil Warnock taking interim charge before stepping down just over a month later. Peter Leven has been leading the team in the interim and will continue to do so until the end of the season.
Thelin, 46, has had a successful tenure at Elfsborg, leading the club to two second-place finishes in the Swedish top-flight. He also has experience managing Jönköpings Södra IF, where he achieved promotion to the top division.
Aberdeen chairman Dave Cormack expressed his delight at securing Thelin’s services, highlighting the coach’s style, playing philosophy, and track record of developing players. The club is hopeful that Thelin will be able to build a successful team over time and create something special at Aberdeen.
With just five points separating Aberdeen from the relegation play-off spot in the Scottish Premiership, Thelin will have his work cut out for him as he looks to steer the team clear of danger in the remaining five games of the season. Additionally, the Dons have a Scottish Cup semi-final clash against Celtic to look forward to this weekend.
Fans can expect to see Thelin take the reins at Aberdeen from June onwards, with the club aiming to secure their status in the top flight and build towards a successful future under the guidance of the new manager.
