Joey Manu Signs with Toyota Verblitz, Leaves Door Open for Sydney Roosters Return

In a surprising turn of events, Joey Manu has announced his departure from the Sydney Roosters to join Japanese rugby union side Toyota Verblitz in 2025. The New Zealand international has signed a year-long deal with the club, marking the end of his time with the Tricolours after the 2024 NRL season.

Manu expressed mixed emotions about leaving the Roosters, stating, “I have cherished my time playing rugby league for the Roosters, so it’s been a tough decision to leave the club and NRL. I will always be grateful to wear the Roosters jersey and to everyone who has supported me and provided me with some incredible opportunities.”

The news of Manu’s departure comes shortly after Zac Lomax’s decision to join Parramatta on a four-year contract. Lomax, who has been frustrated with being shifted to the wing at St George Illawarra, will not be able to leave until the end of the current NRL season.

Parramatta’s chief executive, Jim Sarantinos, expressed confidence in Lomax’s abilities, stating, “Zac is a great talent and we’re confident he will be an invaluable addition to our team.” Lomax has been a standout player for the Dragons this season, particularly in their recent victory over the Wests Tigers.

Despite his success on the wing, Lomax has been vocal about his preference for playing in the centre position. The Dragons have reportedly agreed not to contribute to Lomax’s salary going forward, as they were hesitant to release him from the final two years of his contract.

In addition to Lomax’s move, the Dragons have also secured the services of utility player Nu Brown, who was recently released by Super League club Hull FC. The team is looking to strengthen their roster as they navigate through a challenging season under coach Shane Flanagan.
