GAAY Sports Dodgeball League: Creating Community and Inclusivity in Lansing
The GAAY Sports dodgeball league in Lansing, Michigan, is not your typical middle school gym class experience. Founded in 2022 by Nicholas Wendling, GAAY aims to create an inclusive community space for GLBTQIA+ individuals, allies, and everyone in between. With sports leagues in Lansing, Grand Rapids, and Ann Arbor, GAAY offers a variety of activities, including dodgeball, kickball, and bowling.
On April 6, the final day of the dodgeball season brought together almost 60 players for a fun and friendly competition. Teams like “Lesbians Dodging Balls” and “Big Dodge Energy” showcased their skills and sportsmanship, high-fiving each other after a championship game. The sense of camaraderie and support among players is what sets GAAY apart from traditional sports leagues.
For long-time Lansing resident James Pyle, joining the GAAY kickball league in 2022 was a life-changing experience. Recovering from a leg injury, Pyle found encouragement and strength from his fellow teammates. Now serving as the social chair for the Lansing chapter, Pyle has organized numerous social events, including a drag show fundraiser to support lower registration costs for members.
Members like Elise Essa and Claire Reinhardt have found a sense of belonging and friendship within GAAY sports. Essa, who joined in 2023, cherishes the community and support she has found in the organization. Reinhardt, a recent addition to the dodgeball league, values the opportunity to make new friends and be part of an accepting space.
As GAAY sports continues to grow and attract a diverse group of members, the sense of community and inclusivity remains at the heart of the organization. With more leagues scheduled for the year, including the upcoming kickball season, GAAY provides a safe and welcoming space for individuals to come together, have fun, and celebrate their identities.
