Northern Ireland Rowers Shine at World Cup Regatta: Shorten Wins Gold, Doyle and Lynch Claim Bronze
In an exhilarating start to the rowing season, Northern Ireland rowers made their mark at the first World Cup regatta in Varese. Belfast’s Rebecca Shorten led the Great Britain women’s four to a stunning gold medal victory, while Philip Doyle from Banbridge and his partner Daire Lynch claimed a bronze for Ireland in the men’s double sculls.
Shorten, alongside two-time Olympic champion Helen Glover, Samantha Redgrave, and Esme Booth, dominated the race from start to finish, leaving their competitors trailing behind. This victory marks a significant confidence boost for Shorten and her team as they kick off the Olympic season.
Doyle and Lynch, on the other hand, showcased their trademark sprinting skills in a tightly contested men’s double sculls final, securing a well-deserved bronze medal. Doyle expressed his satisfaction with their performance, highlighting their strategic sprint that propelled them into medal contention.
Meanwhile, there was a second medal for Ireland as Fiona Murtagh and Aifric Keogh clinched silver in the women’s pair event. Despite some near misses, including a fourth-place finish for Hannah Scott and Rebecca Edwards in the women’s quadruple sculls and pair respectively, the Irish team demonstrated their competitive spirit and determination.
As the rowers look ahead to the final Olympic qualification regatta in Lucerne next month, there is a sense of optimism and determination among the athletes. With impressive performances and valuable lessons learned, the Northern Ireland rowers are poised for success in the upcoming competitions.
