Amit Panghal back in India team for final Paris Olympics qualifier in Bangkok

In a bid to secure more quota spots for the Paris Olympics, the Indian boxing team has undergone significant changes for the final qualifier in Bangkok from May 25. One of the most notable changes is the inclusion of Amit Panghal in the 51kg class, replacing Deepak Bhoria.

Panghal, a Tokyo Olympian, has been in fine form recently, winning gold at the Strandja Memorial tournament in February. His addition to the team comes after Bhoria failed to secure an Olympic quota spot despite two opportunities. The decision to bring in Panghal was made after an evaluation by the national camp coaches.

In addition to Panghal, several other changes have been made to the squad. World championships medallist Mohd Hussamuddin and seasoned boxer Shiva Thapa have been dropped from the team, with Sachin Siwach and Abhinash Jamwal taking their spots in the 57kg and 63.5kg categories, respectively.

Nishant Dev, who impressed in the previous qualifier, has retained his place in the 71kg category. Meanwhile, Sanjeet and Narender Berwal have been given another opportunity to secure Olympic berths in the 92kg and +92kg categories.

On the women’s side, Ankushita Boro has replaced Jasmine Lamboria in the 60kg category, while Arundhati Chaudhary will compete in the 66kg category. Boro has moved down from the 66kg category in which she competed in the previous qualifier.

With the team undergoing these changes, Indian boxing fans will be hoping for a better showing in Bangkok as they aim to secure more quota spots for the Paris Olympics.
