Glamorgan in control against Derbyshire as Chris Cooke shines with century
Glamorgan’s Chris Cooke shines with unbeaten century against Derbyshire
In a thrilling Vitality County Championship Division Two match at Sophia Gardens, Glamorgan’s Chris Cooke stole the show with a magnificent unbeaten century against Derbyshire on day three.
After resuming on 74-4, Glamorgan found themselves in a precarious position before Colin Ingram’s half-century provided some stability. However, his unfortunate run-out left the home side struggling at 136-6.
But Cooke had other plans as he put on crucial partnerships with Dan Douthwaite and James Harris, guiding Glamorgan to a commanding second-innings lead of 360 runs. Cooke’s unbeaten 126 was a masterclass in batting, showcasing his skill and determination on the crease.
The match, which had seen low scores and tight bowling from both sides, finally saw one team take control as Glamorgan capitalized on a pitch that seemed to have flattened out after offering assistance to spinners in the earlier days.
Glamorgan’s decision to declare on 361-7 paid off as they managed to pick up an early wicket in Derbyshire’s second innings, with James Harris dismissing Harry Came for just three runs.
Despite Derbyshire reaching 40-1 by the close of play, Glamorgan will be pleased with their dominant position heading into the final day of the match.
Cooke’s century not only put Glamorgan in a strong position in the game but also marked a significant milestone as the 1,000th first-class century in the club’s history. His performance will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the highlights of his testimonial year at Glamorgan.
