Plans in Motion for Renovation and Expansion of UAA Hockey Facility at Avis Alaska Sports Complex
The University of Alaska Anchorage hockey team is gearing up for a major transformation as plans are in motion to renovate and expand the Avis Alaska Sports Complex. After a successful season that saw the Seawolves post a 15-17-2 record, the team is now looking to upgrade their facilities to attract more fans and enhance their recruiting efforts.
According to Ryan Buchholdt, UAA’s vice chancellor for administrative services, the goal is to create a full Division I facility with up to 3,000 seats on campus. The proposed renovation would include two ice sheets, a practice sheet, and a performance sheet, catering to both the university’s needs and the broader community.
Head hockey coach Matt Shasby emphasized the importance of a new facility for recruiting purposes, especially in light of the increasing trend of student-athletes transferring between programs. A modernized venue would not only benefit the UAA hockey team but also provide value for youth hockey and other ice sports in the region.
The Seawolf 5th Line, a hockey booster organization that played a crucial role in saving the team from elimination in 2020, is ready to assist with fundraising efforts for the project. President Kathie Bethard expressed the group’s commitment to supporting the team and providing them with a quality place to play.
As discussions progress and plans take shape, the Anchorage community is eagerly anticipating the revitalization of the Avis Alaska Sports Complex. With the potential for a new state-of-the-art facility on the horizon, both the university and local hockey enthusiasts are looking forward to a bright future for UAA hockey.
