“Flared Tempers Overshadow ISSA Schoolgirls’ Rural Basketball Competition Final”
FLARED TEMPERS brought an ugly end to the 2024 ISSA Schoolgirls’ Rural Basketball competition on Friday, as St Elizabeth Technical High School’s (STETHS) coach Nick-Caro Golding and Mount Alvernia’s Delroy Campbell got into a heated argument during the final match. The incident took some of the shine away from Herbert Morrison Technical High School’s victory over STETHS at the Montego Bay Cricket Club.
The tension between the coaches escalated throughout the game, with match officials and spectators having to intervene to prevent a physical altercation. Despite the animosity, both teams showed respect to each other at the end of the game.
Herbert Morrison dominated the game, securing a convincing 40-17 victory over STETHS. Taveena Clarke of Herbert Morrison was a standout player, scoring 20 points and making significant contributions on both ends of the court. On the other hand, Shanae Graham of STETHS displayed strong defensive skills, ending the game with six points, 11 rebounds, and two steals.
After the game, STETHS players and assistant coach expressed their frustration, attributing their loss to Mount Alvernia’s heckling and internal errors. Coach Golding, although visibly upset, acknowledged Herbert Morrison’s strong performance and their strategic approach to the game.
The top four teams, including Herbert Morrison, have now qualified for the all-island play-offs, set to begin on Friday. Despite the unfortunate end to the competition, the intense rivalry and competitive spirit displayed by the teams have set the stage for an exciting continuation of the basketball season.
