Australian cycling star Jay Vine avoids surgery after horror crash: Relief for pregnant wife Bre

Australian cycling star Jay Vine has received some positive news after his horror crash at the Itzulia Basque Country race. The 28-year-old will not require surgery on the spine injuries he sustained in the accident, much to the relief of his pregnant wife Bre.

Vine, who won last year’s Tour Down Under, suffered “a cervical and two thoracic spine vertebral body fractures” in the crash. Initial fears arose that he would need surgery, but after further assessment, it was determined that surgery would not be necessary.

His UAE Team Emirates medical director, Dr. Adrian Rotunno, stated, “The fractures are stable enough not to warrant surgical correction.” Vine will remain in the hospital for observation and recovery, wearing a neck brace for up to six weeks.

Bre expressed her gratitude for the support they have received during this challenging time. She shared, “A big sigh of relief has swept over the room and the spirits are relatively high all things considering.”

While Vine faces a stepping stone recovery process with numerous appointments and scans, the couple is focused on his rehabilitation. Bre emphasized that they will take it day by day and adjust the plan according to his recovery progress.

Despite the setback, the couple remains optimistic about Vine’s future in cycling. Bre highlighted their determination, stating, “He will fight and come back stronger than ever with the #getwreckedjay Spirit that we love.”

The cycling community rallied around Vine after the crash, with Spain’s Juan Ayuso ultimately taking the overall victory at the Itzulia Basque Country race. Vine’s recovery journey will continue, but the news of avoiding surgery is a significant step in the right direction for the talented Australian cyclist.
