Jim Lampley Reflects on HBO Boxing, Foreman’s Comeback, and His Career in Broadcasting

Legendary boxing play-by-play man Jim Lampley is still feeling the sting of HBO Sports ending its 45-year coverage of the Sweet Science almost six years ago. But he’s not letting that stop him from continuing to be a part of the sport he loves.

Lampley will be ringside for the Devin Haney-Ryan Garcia WBC super welterweight championship bout at Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Saturday, April 20. However, he won’t be calling the fight for DAZN, the streaming service. Instead, he’ll be doing his fifth live chat for PPV.COM alongside Lance Pugmire, Chris Algieri, and Dan Canobbio.

Dale Hopkins, president and CEO of iNDEMAND and PPV.COM, was eager to bring Lampley on board. “His passion for the fighters is what I love most about him,” says Hopkins. “Jim cares and wants the best for them as we do. A marriage made in pay-per-view heaven.”

As Lampley reflects on the changing landscape of boxing broadcasting, he remains puzzled by HBO and Showtime’s decisions to pull the plug on the sport. “I don’t get it,” he admits.

Despite the challenges, Lampley’s love for boxing remains unwavering. From his iconic calls of George Foreman’s historic victories to his time teaching at the University of North Carolina, Lampley’s impact on the sport is undeniable.

As he continues to work with PPV.COM and share his insights on the sport, Lampley’s legacy as one of boxing’s greatest voices is secure. And while he may not have all the answers about the future of boxing broadcasting, one thing is clear – Jim Lampley’s passion for the sport will never fade.
