Hampshire edge Lancashire on day one of Vitality County Championship Division One
In a thrilling day of Vitality County Championship Division One action, Hampshire took on Lancashire at the Utilita Bowl, with Hampshire finishing the day on top at 305-6.
Tom Prest led the charge for Hampshire with a brilliant 85, supported by Nick Gubbins, James Vince, and Liam Dawson who all reached half-centuries. Despite the strong batting performance, Australia spinner Nathan Lyon made his mark for Lancashire, picking up 2-97 in a marathon 32-over spell.
Hampshire skipper Vince won the toss and opted to bat first, giving debutant Ali Orr a chance to impress. However, a miscommunication led to Fletcha Middleton being run out early on. Orr also fell for 10, but Hampshire found their rhythm and built partnerships in overcast conditions.
Vince, who had a stellar season last year, raced to 56 before falling to Lyon. The veteran spinner also dismissed Gubbins shortly after he reached his half-century. Lyon’s battle with Prest was the highlight of the day, with the young batsman looking set for a century before falling to slip.
Despite losing a few quick wickets towards the end of the day, Dawson stood firm and finished unbeaten on 61, providing valuable runs for Hampshire.
Overall, it was a day of ups and downs for both teams, with Hampshire holding the edge going into day two. With Lyon in fine form, Lancashire will be looking to make early inroads on the second day of the match.
