Aldeburgh Native Secures Bronze Medal in ILCA 6 Class in Palma
Aldeburgh native, 22-year-old University of Exeter student, Nicholls, has made her mark in the sailing world by earning a bronze medal in the ILCA 6 class in Palma. This achievement was even more impressive as it was her first-ever medal race.
Nicholls credited her success to the advice she received from her Olympic-bound colleagues, including Princess Sofia gold medallist Micky Bennett and fellow ILCA 6 sailor Hannah Snellgrove. She expressed her gratitude for their guidance and support, stating, “It is very cool to learn from both of them.”
Throughout the competition, Nicholls displayed exceptional skill and determination, securing five top-10 finishes in the first five races and maintaining her position in the standings. Despite facing challenging conditions, including varying wind speeds and tight fleet racing, she remained focused and composed.
In the final medal race, Nicholls delivered a standout performance, finishing in second place and solidifying her spot on the podium. Reflecting on her achievement, she remarked, “It feels amazing, I can’t really believe it to be honest. It still hasn’t settled in but I am super proud of myself.”
Looking ahead, Nicholls is set to compete in the Hyères Regatta alongside Snellgrove, with the goal of securing another podium finish. She also plans to support Snellgrove in her Olympic preparations in Marseille, emphasizing the importance of ironing out any mistakes and giving her all in every race.
Nicholls’ success in Palma serves as a testament to her talent and dedication to the sport of sailing. As she continues to excel on the water, she remains a rising star to watch in the sailing world.
