Hong Kong to Co-Host National Games for the First Time: Eight Events to Showcase City’s Strongest Sports

Hong Kong is set to make history as it co-hosts the upcoming National Games for the very first time next year. The city will showcase its sporting prowess by hosting eight events, including fencing and track cycling, which are among Hong Kong’s strongest sports.

The announcement was made after Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu led a government delegation to Guangzhou for the inaugural meeting of the 15th National Games Organising Committee, of which he is an executive chairman. Lee emphasized that the government will focus on organizing the Games with the principles of ‘simple, safe, and wonderful’, utilizing existing venues and the upcoming Kai Tak Sports Park.

One of the highlights of the Games will be the triathlon event, which will take place in Victoria Harbour and the Central harbourfront, offering a picturesque backdrop of Hong Kong’s landscape. The Games, scheduled from November 9 to 21 next year, will also feature rugby sevens, golf, beach volleyball, men’s handball, and under-22 men’s basketball.

The new Kai Tak Sports Park, with its state-of-the-art facilities, will host handball, rugby sevens, and fencing competitions. Other events will be spread across the city, with venues like the Hong Kong Coliseum for basketball, the Velodrome in Tseung Kwan O for track cycling, and Victoria Park for beach volleyball.

Lee expressed that co-hosting the National Games and Paralympic Games will be a great opportunity for Hong Kong to showcase its ability to organize large-scale sporting events. The city will also host events as part of the 12th National Games for Persons with Disabilities and the 9th National Special Olympic Games, further highlighting its commitment to inclusive sports participation.

Overall, the upcoming National Games will not only be a celebration of sports excellence but also a platform for Hong Kong to demonstrate its organizational capabilities on a national stage.
