Ospreys’ Adam Beard aims for historic European semi-final with Gloucester clash

Ospreys lock Adam Beard is gearing up for a historic clash as his team takes on Gloucester in the European Challenge Cup quarter-final on Friday, 12 April. Beard, who has played 56 internationals for Wales, is hoping to lead Ospreys to their first-ever European semi-final.

After securing their first European knockout win against Sale last weekend, Ospreys are now in uncharted territory. Coach Toby Booth has rejuvenated the team since taking over in 2020, making them the only Welsh side to have reached the Champions Cup or Challenge Cup this season.

“We just need to enjoy it and not put too much pressure on ourselves,” Beard said. “That is what has been best for us over the last couple of years. We are a group of players who are enjoying our rugby and each other’s company and work hard. That is the vibe we have this week and that’s when we play our best rugby.”

Ospreys have a tough history in European knock-out games, with losses against the likes of Saracens, Munster, and Biarritz in previous years. However, Beard is confident in the team’s abilities and is relishing his role within the club.

“I am loving it here. I feel as if though I have a big role within this club, whether it be on or off the field. It helps we are playing some good rugby and getting some good wins,” Beard added.

Coach Booth echoed Beard’s sentiments, praising the lock for his passion and leadership within the team. “He is one of the people I resonated with straight away when I got here,” Booth said. “We’re privileged to have him around as one of a number of leaders.”

With Ospreys looking to make history, all eyes will be on Beard and his teammates as they aim to secure a spot in the semi-finals of the European Challenge Cup.
