Plans Revealed for New Building to House Narrabeen Lakes Sailing Club After Devastating Fire
Plans have been unveiled for a new building to house the Narrabeen Lakes Sailing Club on the northern beaches, following a devastating fire that destroyed their previous clubhouse and boats in late 2021.
The new sports amenities block, located on the shore of Narrabeen Lagoon, will not only accommodate the sailing club but also include a kiosk or cafe, as well as views of the lake from a covered deck or verandah. The Northern Beaches Council is currently seeking public feedback on the design, which was created with input from the 113-year-old sailing club.
The fire, which occurred on November 27, 2021, left the club heartbroken as they lost 24 boats and their clubhouse. In the aftermath of the tragedy, the community rallied together to support the club, with donations pouring in to help replace the lost boats and equipment. Other Sydney sailing clubs also lent boats to the club so they could continue their sailing season.
The new building will feature expanded boat storage, club rooms, public toilets, and a multipurpose indoor space. The design aims to meet the needs of the community and the clubs that utilize the site, including the Narrabeen Lakes Sailing Club and Jamieson Park Paddle.
The club, which had just signed up 30 children for a learn-to-sail program before the fire, is looking forward to rebuilding and continuing their sailing activities. The proposed design has been developed in collaboration with the sailing club and architects, with the council seeking feedback from the community to ensure it meets their expectations.
Overall, the plans for the new building offer hope and a fresh start for the Narrabeen Lakes Sailing Club, as they look to recover from the devastating fire and continue their long-standing tradition of sailing on the northern beaches.
