Local Tennis Associations Partner to Bring Tennis Program to Kids in East St. Louis

The sport of tennis is making a comeback in East St. Louis thanks to a new partnership between the United States Tennis Association (USTA) and the East St. Louis Community Tennis Association (E.S.L.C.T.A.). The two organizations have joined forces to bring tennis lessons to students at Lincoln Middle School, promoting a healthy lifestyle and providing a fun and engaging gym class experience.

City leaders are excited about the initiative, citing the success of iconic tennis players like Jimmie Conners who hail from East St. Louis. Robert Betts, East St. Louis City Manager, expressed his support for organized sports for kids, emphasizing the importance of constructive athletic training.

Students at Lincoln Middle School are eager to learn the fundamentals of tennis, with many recognizing the benefits the sport can offer. Tayden Goodwin, a football and track athlete, believes tennis will improve his footwork and provide a great off-season activity. Kanya McClain and Ronald Ferrell are excited about the new opportunities and connections that tennis can bring.

Over 400 students will participate in the program, with professional coaching staff providing equipment and supplies. The goal is to not only introduce students to the game of tennis but also to prepare them for potential opportunities at the high school, state, and national levels.

The partnership between USTA, E.S.L.C.T.A., East St. Louis School District 189, and the East St. Louis Park District is a unique initiative that aims to promote the growth of tennis in the community. By focusing on skills like sportsmanship, leadership, and social interaction, organizers hope to instill valuable life lessons in the students through the sport of tennis.
