Diving: The Perfect Transition for Former Gymnasts with Ottawa National Diving Club
Ottawa National Diving Club Seeks Gymnasts for New Opportunities
Mary Villemaire, a former gymnast turned coach at the Ottawa National Diving Club, is on a mission to recruit gymnasts and other athletes interested in diving. With over 15 years of coaching experience, Villemaire understands the unique skills and challenges that gymnasts bring to the sport of diving.
According to Villemaire, there is a significant crossover between gymnastics and diving, making the transition for gymnasts relatively seamless. Their spatial awareness and aerial skills are assets that can be easily transferred to diving. The biggest challenge for gymnasts entering diving, Villemaire explains, is adjusting to diving headfirst into the water instead of landing on their feet.
As a coach, Villemaire recognizes the differences in coaching techniques between gymnastics and diving. While gymnastics is more hands-on, diving requires a more auditory approach, with athletes relying on the feel of their own bodies in the water.
Villemaire, who comes from a family of Olympic gymnasts, is a Level 1 and Level 2 certified coach in gymnastics, trampoline, and diving. She is passionate about coaching former gymnasts and helping them succeed in the sport of diving.
The Ottawa National Diving Club has a track record of success, with athletes earning NCAA scholarships and national team opportunities. Villemaire emphasizes the positive and inclusive environment at the club, describing it as a family rather than just a sports team.
