SU Sports Recap: Softball Swept, Tennis Splits, Track and Field Competes, Rowing Success
The Syracuse Orange have been busy in Olympic sports over the past week, with various teams competing in softball, tennis, track and field, and rowing. Let’s take a closer look at how each team fared in their recent competitions.
In softball, the Orange (18-17, 4-11) faced a tough challenge against #19 Clemson, getting swept in a three-game series. Despite the losses, infielder Madelyn Lopez had a standout performance with five hits in the series, extending her hitting streak to four games. Syracuse bounced back with a doubleheader sweep against Colgate, highlighted by a walk-off win in game one and a strong pitching performance in game two. The team will now head to Seton Hall for a three-game series this weekend.
On the tennis court, Syracuse (10-10, 4-9) had mixed results in their matches against Notre Dame and Louisville. After a tough loss to Notre Dame, the Orange rebounded on Senior Day with a dominant 7-0 win over Louisville. The team will now shift their focus to the upcoming ACC Tournament starting on April 17.
In track and field, the Syracuse women’s team had a solid showing at the Cortland Red Dragon Open, with underclassmen runners Madeline Lutz and Lucy Zombek finishing in the top six of the 1500m race. The team will have a busy weekend ahead, with select athletes competing in various meets around the country.
In rowing, both the men’s and women’s teams had impressive performances. The men’s team moved up to #7 in the IRCA/IRA varsity 8 rankings after beating top-ranked teams at the Pac-12 Invitational. The women’s varsity 4 also had a strong showing, winning the Cayuga Cup and earning the ACC Crew of the Week award. Both teams will look to continue their success in upcoming competitions.
