Micky Beckett Secures Hat-Trick of World Cup Wins in Palma
Micky Beckett experienced a sense of déjà-vu at the Trofeo Princesa Sofia Regatta in Mallorca, as he aimed for a third consecutive title in the ILCA 7 class. Last year, Beckett had a disqualification that cost him the World Championship title, allowing his main rival Matt Wearn to claim victory. This time, Beckett was determined to avoid a similar fate.
Despite a disqualification in the seventh race, Beckett maintained his dominance throughout the regatta. In the final race, he sailed at the front of the fleet with no drama, securing his third World Cup win in Palma. Reflecting on his victory, Beckett expressed relief and satisfaction at overcoming his past demons.
Beckett and Wearn have been the top contenders in the ILCA 7 class leading up to the Olympics, with Wearn winning both the Olympic Test Event and the Worlds last year. However, Beckett’s recent success in Palma has boosted his confidence as he continues his training for the upcoming Games.
The British sailor credits his improved decision-making and risk management for his victory in Palma, highlighting the importance of strategic choices in sailing. With his sights set on the Olympics in Marseille this summer, Beckett will now compete in French Olympic Week in Hyères, aiming to build on his recent triumph.
As Beckett looks ahead to the Games, he emphasizes the importance of managing his fitness and form to peak at the right time. With plenty of work still to be done, Beckett remains focused on maintaining control and pacing himself for success on the world stage.
