Ronnie O’Sullivan Launches Snooker Academy in Singapore, Aims to Develop Asian Talent

Snooker legend Ronnie O’Sullivan has set his sights on Asia as the future of the sport, launching his inaugural academy in Singapore with the aim of nurturing talents in the region. The Ronnie O’Sullivan Snooker Academy (RoSSA) opened its doors at The Grandstand, boasting 12 snooker and 16 pool tables in a 16,000 square-foot venue.

The 46-year-old Englishman, who holds numerous records in the sport, believes that Asia’s strong links and reputation as a global city for events make Singapore the perfect springboard for his academy’s plans. Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Edwin Tong joined O’Sullivan at the opening ceremony, showing his support for the initiative.

RoSSA aims to develop a strong base of snooker players in the region and organize competitions to help young talents hone their skills before venturing into the professional circuit. The academy plans to hold 23 ranking events and 30 mini-tournaments in 2022, providing opportunities for promising players to compete and continue their development.

In a bid to support aspiring players, RoSSA has provided scholarships to former national snooker player Jaden Ong and national pool player Sharik Sayed. The academy is also working towards being recognized as a Centre of Excellence by Cuesports Singapore, further solidifying its commitment to developing the sport in the region.

As part of the academy’s launch, O’Sullivan will participate in a four-player snooker tournament on 18 June, giving fans the chance to see the snooker great in action. RoSSA members and the public can also look forward to exhibition matches against O’Sullivan next week.

With plans to expand into Thailand and China in the near future, RoSSA is poised to make a significant impact on the snooker scene in Asia. Fans and enthusiasts can get involved in the excitement by visiting the academy’s official website for more information on upcoming events and opportunities to engage with the sport.
