Tony Smith addresses Hull FC’s defensive frailties: “It’s not just about systems”
Hull FC’s head coach, Tony Smith, has come out to defend his team’s defensive systems following their recent 56-22 loss to Huddersfield Giants. The Black and Whites have been struggling defensively, conceding a staggering 302 points in their last eight games, with an average of 37 points per game.
Smith believes that the team’s biggest issue lies in players being left isolated and falling off tackles too often, leading to poor first contact. He emphasized the importance of getting numbers into tackles and working together as a team to prevent leaks in their defense.
The head coach also acknowledged that Hull’s defensive struggles are not just physical but also mental. He pointed out the fatigue some players are experiencing, with forward Jordan Lane making the most tackles in Super League this season. Smith hinted at potential changes in the lineup for upcoming games against St Helens and Leeds Rhinos to address these issues.
“It’s mentally and physically,” Smith explained. “Some of these boys have been playing a lot. Laney played 80 minutes again. Last week, he couldn’t make the eighty because he did 63 tackles. He hasn’t been sin-binned yet and he’s been out there for most of the matches where there is somebody in the sin bin. He’s tired Laney, at the moment, and for a good reason.”
With Hull FC facing a tough run of games ahead, including matches against strong opponents like St Helens and Leeds Rhinos, Smith is looking to make changes to improve the team’s defensive performance and boost their confidence. The head coach’s focus on teamwork and mental resilience could be key in turning around Hull FC’s defensive woes.
