Jamaica Cycling Classic 2024 Elevates Island’s Reputation as Premier Sports Tourism Destination
Jamaica’s growing reputation as a top destination for sports tourism took a significant leap over the weekend with the successful staging of the third Jamaica Cycling Classic in Montego Bay, St James. The event, which ran from April 5-8 in the Rose Hall area and culminated in Ironshore, attracted top Jamaican cyclists as well as competitors from other countries.
Organised by Simmonds High Velocity Cycling Club, the Jamaica Cycling Classic 2024 exceeded all expectations, with participants and spectators praising the event for its seamless organisation, challenging course, and festive atmosphere. From amateur riders to seasoned professionals, cyclists of all levels came together to test their skills and enjoy the thrill of competing in an event that is growing in stature.
Mayor of Montego Bay, councillor Richard Vernon, highlighted the significance of the event, stating that it showcased the natural beauty and vibrant culture of Jamaica while attracting international cycling authorities. The presence of representatives from prominent governing bodies, including the UCI, underscored the event’s growing significance on the global stage.
Senior strategist and senior adviser in the Ministry of Tourism, Delano Seiveright, expressed aspirations to secure broadcasting rights with Global Sports Network for next year’s event, aiming to bring unprecedented international exposure to the race.
The success of the Jamaica Cycling Classic was evident in the performance of Colombian team Medellin, with Christian Saavedra securing back-to-back wins and teammate Wilmar Andres Paredes Zapata emerging as the overall winner. Coach Julian Velasques expressed his team’s delight with their performance and their desire to return for future editions of the event.
