Azumah Nelson Explains Why His Son Chose to Quit Boxing: “Not for Privileged Individuals”

Azumah Nelson, a boxing icon in Ghana, has shed light on his son’s decision to walk away from the sport. The younger Nelson, Dalvin Azumah Nelson Junior, made the tough choice to retire from boxing due to the demanding nature of the sport and the challenges it presented in balancing his education.

In a recent interview with Dan Kwaku Yeboah TV, Azumah Nelson revealed that his son realized that boxing is a pursuit for individuals who have faced hardships and challenges, not for those who have led privileged lives. The former WBC featherweight champion emphasized the dedication and determination required in the sport, highlighting the early morning training sessions and rigorous gym routines that boxers must endure.

Despite his son’s decision to step away from boxing, Azumah Nelson expressed no concern, understanding the physical toll that the sport can take on an individual. He acknowledged that boxing is not for everyone and commended his son for recognizing his limitations and choosing a different path.

While Azumah Nelson’s son may have decided to leave the boxing world, the sport continues to thrive in Ghana. Rising talents like Abubakar Kamoko, son of Bukom Banku, are making waves in the ring, carrying on the legacy of boxing excellence in the country. Kamoko’s recent silver medal win at the 2023 African Games is a testament to the continued success of Ghanaian boxers and the impact of legends like Azumah Nelson on the sport.

Azumah Nelson’s own legacy in African boxing is firmly established, with a record of 39 wins, two draws, and six losses in 47 bouts. His contributions to the sport have earned him a well-deserved place in the International Boxing Hall of Fame, solidifying his status as one of the greatest boxers to come out of Ghana.
