World Athletics to Award Prize Money at Olympic Games

World Athletics has made a groundbreaking decision to award prize money at the Olympic Games, marking a significant shift in the world of sports. With a total prize pot of $2.4 million available for this summer’s Olympics in Paris, athletes who clinch the gold medal will receive $50,000 each. This move is set to empower athletes and recognize their invaluable contribution to the success of the Games.

World Athletics president Lord Coe hailed the decision as a “pivotal moment” for the sport of athletics. He emphasized the importance of acknowledging the dedication and commitment it takes for athletes to compete at the Olympic level. The introduction of prize money for Olympic gold medallists is a step towards ensuring that athletes are fairly rewarded for their hard work and achievements.

Former Olympic gold medallist Greg Rutherford praised the initiative, calling it a “brilliant step in the right direction.” He highlighted the misconception that Olympic sports are still amateur, stating that athletes dedicate their lives to training and competing at the highest level.

While the International Olympic Committee (IOC) does not award prize money, World Athletics’ decision sets a new precedent for recognizing and rewarding athletes’ efforts. The format and structure of prize money for the 2028 Games will be announced closer to the event, with the condition that athletes must undergo and clear anti-doping procedures to receive their prize money.

This move by World Athletics underscores the organization’s commitment to supporting athletes and ensuring their contributions are valued. As the sporting world evolves, it is crucial to acknowledge and reward the dedication and talent of athletes who inspire and captivate audiences around the globe.
