Saddleworth Rangers Under-15s Team Prepares for Groundbreaking Tour to Jamaica

The Saddleworth Rangers’ under-15s rugby league team is gearing up for an exciting and groundbreaking tour to Jamaica, thanks to the generous donations from local councillors. The team has raised over £20,000 for the trip, which will see them visit schools, conduct training sessions, and play matches in the Caribbean.

Councillors Max Woodvine, Graham Sheldon, and Helen Bishop used their ward monies to have protective scrum caps and commemorative sun hats made for the players. Each player has their initials on their headgear, adding a personal touch to the gear. The team was presented with the caps on Sunday, March 17, in preparation for their upcoming adventure.

Jane Talbot, who has been instrumental in coordinating the fundraising efforts and organizing the tour, emphasized the importance of providing protective gear for the players. With the long-term effects of concussion in mind, the scrum caps are essential for safeguarding the developing brains of the adolescent players. The commemorative sun hats will also protect the team from the Caribbean sun, ensuring they stay safe and comfortable during their time in Jamaica.

The tour to Jamaica holds special significance for the team, as the island nation is set to make its debut at the Rugby League World Cup in England in 2022. Additionally, there is a connection through former Jamaica international Junior Brandford, who once played for Saddleworth. The tour aims to engage with grassroots rugby in Jamaica, providing equipment and training to local schools to support the growth of the sport.

With the support of sponsors and successful fundraising events, the team is close to reaching their target of £26,000 for the trip. The players are excited for the opportunity to represent Saddleworth in Jamaica and leave a lasting impact on the local rugby community. As they prepare to embark on this unforgettable journey, the team is grateful for the community’s support and looks forward to the experiences that lie ahead.
