Ronnie O’Sullivan praises Mark Williams after Tour Championship final defeat

Mark Williams emerged victorious in the final of the Tour Championship on Sunday night, stunning Ronnie O’Sullivan with a remarkable comeback to secure the title in Manchester. Despite being 5-3 down going into the evening session, Williams produced a masterclass in snooker to win 10-5 and claim the glory.

O’Sullivan, known as the Rocket, graciously praised his opponent after the match, acknowledging Williams’ exceptional talent and consistency over the years. The five-time world champion admitted that Williams, at 49 years old, is currently playing at his peak and can be a formidable force on the snooker table.

“I think he’s been the best player and the most consistent player for the last five years,” O’Sullivan said. “The way he’s been hitting the ball, very rarely does he play a poor match. The way he’s played this week and tonight. Just an amazing player really and so talented.”

Despite his disappointment at not winning the tournament, O’Sullivan commended Williams for his performance and joked that Williams would be the number one player in the world if he dedicated his entire life to snooker.

As for Williams, the Welshman expressed his delight at the victory, joking that his two sons had only attended the final to watch O’Sullivan in action. He also humbly acknowledged his success as a part-time player, emphasizing his dedication and determination on the table.

With this triumph, Williams has earned £150,000 in prize money, while O’Sullivan takes home £60,000 as the runner-up. The snooker world now eagerly awaits the upcoming World Championships, with Williams poised to defend his title and O’Sullivan determined to reclaim his spot at the top.
