City of Kirkland Honours Lakeshore Cougars and Montreal Mavericks for Football Achievements

The City of Kirkland recently honored the pee wee and bantam Lakeshore Cougars, as well as the Montreal Mavericks flag football squad, for their outstanding accomplishments in the sport. The two Cougar squads had perfect seasons, with the pee-wees claiming the President’s Cup and the bantams earning the bantam AAA Coupe D’Or. The Mavericks were also recognized for being the World Champions in flag football for the U 13 age category.

The celebration was made even more special with the presence of Mark Weightman, president and CEO of the Montreal Alouettes, and Grey Cup hero Tyson Philpot, who was also named the Most Valuable Canadian in that game.

Ted Stote, president of Lakeshore football, expressed his gratitude for Kirkland’s recognition, stating, “I think validation for putting in all the work and winning is one thing but to get to come to the city and have the city acknowledge the work as well I think it just gives the kids a better perspective.”

The participation of the Alouettes was also a highlight of the event, with Stote mentioning, “Having the biggest cup you can win in Canada here and having one of Canada’s top players is a great opportunity for the kids. We’re really blessed to have the Alouettes participating a little bit in our organization.”

Tyson Philpot, who recently returned from British Columbia, was thrilled to be part of the evening, emphasizing the importance of giving back to the community and inspiring young athletes. He shared, “Just being able to be in the community more and kind of learn from the guys. Just give back to the community as much as I can. I still remember the BC Lions coming into my elementary school when I was a young kid. So just being able to run around with the pro guys and just like get that image in my mind was something I could do when I’m older. So I’ve always said that I want to always give back and let those guys have that image of me.”

Overall, the event was a celebration of hard work, dedication, and the importance of community support in youth sports.
