Laney’s Yusuke Sugawara Making Waves as No. 1 Singles Player for Buccaneers
Laney High School’s Yusuke Sugawara is making waves on the tennis court this spring, despite his relatively short time playing the sport. The junior, who splits his time between Wilmington and Japan, has quickly risen to the top spot on the Buccaneers’ roster.
Born in Wilmington to Japanese parents, Sugawara has always had a unique perspective on high school life, spending his summers attending school in Japan to experience a different culture. This exposure has shaped his approach to sports, academics, and life in general.
While Laney’s tennis team has faced some early-season struggles, Sugawara has been a standout player for coach Adam King. Known for his competitive spirit and sense of humor, Sugawara brings a fresh perspective to the court as he continues to improve and learn the game.
In addition to his success on the tennis court, Sugawara also serves as the goalkeeper for Laney’s boys soccer team in the fall. His versatility and dedication to both sports showcase his commitment to athletic excellence.
Despite the differences in high school culture between the U.S. and Japan, Sugawara has found success in both settings. With a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn, he is confident that he and his teammates can turn their season around and achieve more success in the future.
As Sugawara continues to grow and develop as a tennis player, his unique background and experiences set him apart on the court. With the support of his coaches and teammates, he is poised to make a lasting impact on the Laney High School tennis program.
